How Blurgh came to be

How Blurgh came to be.

First of all, we’re ¾ of the way there! Huge thank you to all of our amazing backers – we can’t wait to share this game with you.

One of our backers asked us to share a little about how Blurgh was created… So, this is our story!

Blurgh has its roots in our first game – F**k. The Game – but we’ve taken it in a really unique direction (that’s even funnier than the original!).

Quick backstory… F**k. The Game was funded on Kickstarter in 2015. From humble beginnings, the game took off rapidly around the world. (So much so, that I found myself changing careers from graphic designer and musician, to game maker and independent publisher.) As the game’s popularity grew, we expanded to new languages, put out a DIY deck, and set up Inkster Games to help us keep getting great games out around the world.

We feel really proud to have brought a lot of laughter to people in so many different corners of the earth. And in times like this, we all need as many reasons as possible to laugh.

So why make Blurgh?

Over the years we’ve played a lot of great games and listened to great feedback from our players (both in person and from thousands of reviews). We get fantastic feedback for F**k. The Game, but our fans helped us see that we could make it so much better! So we decided to take it as far as we could imagine, and make it as fun as possible.

We decided to keep F**k. The Game as a great portable game and make Blurgh more of a stay-at-home party game. It’s the full big box experience that can get up to 20 people laughing their asses off!

After many weeks of playtesting (and perhaps a few too many Friday night beers) we developed a plan to take this game to the next level.

The first step was to increase the amount of playing cards and word/colour combinations to allow for more players and longer playing rounds. That’s why there are now 120 Blurgh playing cards.

But after that is where things got really interesting…

Next level

We had some players say the game was too hard, while simultaneously saying it was too easy. So, we wanted a load of new rules, and for the game to be fully customizable to the group that’s playing each night.

We play tested hundreds of different rules over the years and chose 60 of the best. The idea was for players to add in as many (or as few) challenge cards as the group can handle. So, just when you think you’re getting the hang of the game, add a couple of new challenge cards and you’ve got a new game and a new ways to mess up.

Our original (over worked) playtesting Challenge card concepts

Adding the element of chance

Do you secretly hate on that know-it-all that seems to win every round? Turns out you’re not alone!

We’ve always loved the game Mario Kart for the way it kept even the slowest player in the game with a chance to win. We wanted to bring this to Blurgh, so you never really know who’s going to win. Yes, you can win with skill, but it can also go down to pure luck.

Take our PASS card for example, this simple rule can totally mess with a player’s winning streak and give even the worst player of that game a fighting chance.

Player creations

The element we’re still most excited about, we’d already tried and tested: our patented dual layer scratch cards.

We originally brought out the DIY deck as an expansion for F**k. The Game. The idea was to find a way for players to add their own words, pictures or rules to use in the game. We tried so many different ways to create a DIY card, but nothing quite captured the style and colour of the game – until we figured out we could create these colourful scratch cards.

We soon realised just how much of a game changer these could be and how much players of F**k. The Game were missing out on if they didn’t get to try them.

Scratching these cards is so addictive (trust us!) so we’ve included 80 scratch cards with each game. We’ve also included a load of suggestions of how you can use these cards with Blurgh, based on our favourites from playtesting.

There’s all new colour combinations, and we also made them much easier to scratch.

Why faces?

During our testing of scratch card rules, some of the biggest laughs were had from drawing each other and adding strange and unusual rules when each player’s face appeared.

You get to laugh at all of the hilarious faces and different drawing styles but it also made it a more fun gameplay experience. We soon found many players wanted to keep their face cards as a memento of the night and it also creates a hilarious picture album of your friends and family that can be used next time you play. That’s why the first thing to do in Blurgh is draw each other using our scratch cards.

We loved how everyone has their own unique drawing style :)

Putting it all together

So that’s it in a nutshell! We combined all these new concepts into Blurgh and play tested it over and over again to find the right balance. (Big thanks to everyone who spent so many hours playtesting with us!)

We can’t wait for you to try the Blurgh and experience just how fun it is!
